Music
A hopefully non-pretentious mission statement.
I remember badgering my parents to play the Raffi CD we had in the car. Silly songs about food, brushing teeth, and other parables. I believe the album was "Singable Songs for the Very Young". Similarly my parents went on a vacation (no kids allowed) and came back with the Cirque Soleil CD for the Beatles. Any car ride now was ALL about that one album. The journey of following one song to another. One song completes and you anticipate the next song barreling into the speakers. This would continue on, with the rotating obsession varying from All American Rejects, Gorillaz’ Demon Days, the Green Day Best Of CD.
Now my inner child in my head still prods the older me to turn on that new Weeknd album, that new FKA twigs album. “You have to listen to this other cool thing I heard about. My friend recommended- Let’s listen back to that old-”. My running note on my phone,“albums to listen to” is an incomprehensible data base that I keep building and adding to. One album listened to and thoroughly appreciated, add five more.
I really love music more than a lot of things in my life. It has made me see the world in a different way, it makes me experience my day to day. More recently, as my attention span dwindles and the stress of the world increases, my appreciation for music has come to be just check lists. My hope for this Substack is a personal reclamation of the joy of music by sitting down and writing about it, thinking about it on a deeper level. And perhaps you reader can read in, and share/discuss these albums with me.
On this substack, I just want to talk about what I’m listening to. What I’m enjoying (or perhaps not enjoying) and challenge myself to just engage more in this art that I’ve always loved. I think so much music content right now can be either too mechanical, drenched in hype, or just plain unthoughtful. In a best case scenario… others read this and feel that I fill that gap. My intent however, is to have that conversation that I want to have myself, without anybody else. I don’t want to do this for anybody really. If I’m the only person reading this, then that’s great. If you’re reading this and you like what I write… that’s also nice too… Please join in on the conversation! Let’s have fun. But I just want to put out into the world what I want to see more of.
And that’s it…
Okay…
Thank you,
Evan
